Arsenal have agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid for Lucas Torreira while Thomas Partey could be going the other way.
Mikel Arteta is desperate to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer after identifying it as a problematic position.
The Gunners have been devoid of a strong’ defensive midfielder for some time now.
They have not had a specialist in the position since Gilberto Silva, while current options Torreira and Granit Xhaka are not those kind of players.
And the former is keen on leaving after being ostracised from the squad.
Torreira has barely featured under Arteta and is desperate to go in search of first-team football.
Atletico Madrid have emerged as potential suitors and could overtake the likes of Fiorentina and Torino.
Both Serie A outfits are interested but only want a loan deal whereas Arsenal would favour a permanent move.
Atletico are keen, according to El Gol Digital, but are struggling to put together a financial package to sign the Uruguayan.
Diego Simeone is said to be a huge fan, though, having watched him throughout last season.
He admires the ex-Sampdoria star’s style and likes his tough-tackling, gritty attitude on the pitch.
Furthermore, a deal could be struck that would see Partey go the other way.
The Ghana international is Arteta’s top target as he looks to bolster his midfield by adding some steel but has found Atletico tough negotiators.
But with Torreira also on the table, a deal could be struck that works out for all parties.
And former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has told the Emirates chiefs to land Partey for Arteta this summer.
