Arsenal chief Edu backed to switch Thomas Partey tactic after Houssem Aouar setback

Arsenal chief Edu is working on a deal for Thomas Partey.

Arsenal technical director Edu has been tipped to switch his transfer tactic in the pursuit of Thomas Partey which could help him land Mikel Arteta’s top target before the October 5 deadline.

From the start of the summer Edu has been working on trying to offload some of the Gunners’ fringe players.

Mikel Arteta was told he must balance the books if he wants to bring any of his key targets in.

Atletico Madrid will not let Partey leave the Spanish capital for any less than his £45million release clause.

Arsenal have been trying to raise funds for the Ghana international and received £20m from Aston Villa for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Midfielder Lucas Torreira was also closing in on a move to Serie A side Torino which would have provided a major financial boost.

But Sky Sports transfer expert Dharmesh Sheth thinks Terreira could be used in the deal for Partey as Edu may look into a swap deal as he shifts his approach.

Arsenal had pegged Lyon midfielder Houssem Aoura as an alternative for Partey but Lyon knocked back their offer of taking Matteo Guendouzi on loan.

That has led Edu into reconsidering his options and he is weighing up whether to table a swap deal with Atletico.

“There is an interest in Partey, that’s clear,” Sheth told Sky Sports’ Transfer Show.

“There is also any interest in Houssem Aouar from Lyon. There is also talk of a player-exchange deal which could see Matteo Guendouzi go.

“By all accounts Lyon didn’t want to do that deal.

“Torino looked like they were in the driving seat for Lucas Torreira and the deal was very, very close worth, £22m.

“One way or another Arsenal want to raise funds and they would have used that £22m deal to fund a £45m deal with Thomas Partey.

“Now, Atletico Madrid are on the lookout for possible Thomas Partey replacement and they might think Lucas Torreira is of interest and he can part fund a deal for Partey to go the other way.

“It is one to watch. It has not been confirmed by Arsenal but we do know they are listening to offers for Torreira.

“Emiliano Martinez has gone from Arsenal to Aston Villa for an initial £16m, rising to £20m.

“As we know, deals that get done, all of the money is not put up front.

“If they are to get some of the money up front for Lucas Terreira, or it would be done through Atletico Madrid and they would be able to organise some sort of deal.”
