Arsenal are gearing up for the new Premier League season as Express Sport brings you the latest injury news and expected return dates.
Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Fulham, who return to the top-flight after a one-year absence. Mikel Arteta has been busy strengthening his side as the Gunners look to close the gap on the top four. And they have already shown they do not fear the Premier League’s top sides after getting the better of Liverpool in last month’s Community Shield.
“When I was in the dressing room I had the feeling they believed we could win. They didn’t feel any fear,” said Arteta.
“They wanted to really go for it and believed they could win another trophy. And they showed from the first minute their courage and their passion.
“We know that if you want to fight for trophies you can’t concede the amount of goal we have over the last few seasons, that’s for sure. But obviously with the ball in the attacking phase we must do a lot better.
“We had some periods where we showed we are developing in the right direction. Defensively we are solid, we are difficult to beat.
“Really, if we have the mindset that we have 11 players doing it, that it doesn’t matter who your name is, I think we have a really good chance.”
Arteta will be without some players for the clash against Fulham due to injuries.
Gabriel Martinelli picked up a knee injury in training that required surgery.
Arsenal’s medical team said the Brazilian “will step up his rehab with the aim of a return to full training by the end of the calendar year”.
Shkodran Mustafi sustained an injury to his right hamstring in the FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City.
An update on Arsenal’s website reads: “The current focus for the near future will be on indoor work in the pool, treadmill running and gym work. Aiming to return to full training in October.”
One player that could be back soon is Pablo Mari, who is close to recovering from an ankle injury.
He picked up the problem during the away trip to City back in June.
Calum Chambers has been out of action since December with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
He is due back in full training before the end of the year.
Arsenal’s medical team said: “Programme in forthcoming weeks will continue with running outside and light ball work.”
