Ashley Cole and Alan Shearer have outlined how Arsenal need to improve for next season.
The Gunners are on a high after winning the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in Saturday’s final thanks to two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Yet Arsenal fell someway short in the league and questions remain over Aubameyang’s future due to the striker having just one year left on his contract.
Former Gunners full-back Cole says the Gunners must tie down Aubameyang to a new deal and then look at adding some experienced well-known players to support him.
Cole said on Match of the Day: “I still think you need some experience.
“It’s all good if you can keep Aubameyang and it’s good with the youngsters but you’ve got to bring in some top names alongside him as well.”
With the Gunners failing to qualify for Europe through the Premier League this season, they have a long way to go to make the Champions League places next year.
Yet Alan Shearer believes that is what Mikel Arteta will be targeting in his first full season in charge at the Emirates.
However, the former Newcastle United striker warned that the Gunners’ current squad will need to be strengthened in the summer transfer window if they are to achieve Arteta’s goals for next season.
Shearer said: “Arteta will want to get in and around the top-four next season.
“That’s what he’ll want to do.
“With the squad he’s got, no I don’t think he can, I think he’ll need improvements to that.”
