Mikel Arteta and Edu react to Aubameyang signing new Arsenal deal

Mikel Arteta has hailed ‘superb’ Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and told the forward he can become one of the best players in the world at Arsenal after signing a new deal with the Premier League club.

Aubameyang, who joined the Gunners in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund, has penned a new three-year contract at the Emirates.

The 31-year-old won the Premier League Golden Boot in his first full season in 2018-19 and scored in Arsenal’s opening-day victory over Fulham on Saturday.

After Arsenal confirmed Aubameyang had committed his future to the club, manager Arteta said: ‘It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us.

‘He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality. ‘Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.

‘He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.’

Aubameyang has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe over the past five years, scoring 72 goals in 111 appearances for Arsenal. He starred in the Gunners’ FA Cup triumph last season – scoring twice in the final as Arteta’s side beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley.

With his previous contract expiring in the summer of 2021, Arsenal fans had been concerned that he was coming to the end of his career in north London, but the club confirmed they had agreed a contract extension on Tuesday afternoon.

Arsenal technical director Edu added: ‘It’s clear Auba loves the club and everything we stand for on and off the pitch.

‘He’s obviously a very important part of the team so we’re all delighted he has committed his future to us. ‘It’s a big boost for everyone – fans, team-mates and staff.’
