Speaking after the triumph over Chelsea, the Gunners boss provided a ‘yes or no’ response when quizzed on whether he thinks Aubameyang will extend his contract at the Emirates.
Mikel Arteta believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is destined to extend his stay at Arsenal after the striker guided the Gunners to victory in the FA Cup final.
Aubameyang struck either side of half-time to overturn an early deficit and beat Chelsea 2-1 in the Wembley showdown.
The Gabon star’s future has been the subject of huge speculation as his contract at the Emirates Stadium expires next summer.
He is linked with a move to Inter Milan or Barcelona, but Arteta is desperate for the talismanic forward to sign a new deal.
Speaking after the match, the Gunners boss outlined his plans to “build the squad” around Aubameyang and declared he believes the 31-year-old will extend his stay.
“He knows what I think about him. I want to build the squad around him. I think he wants to stay and it is just about getting the deal done,” Arteta said.
“But I think these moments will help him to realise and believe that we are in the right path and he is a big part of that. He is loved by everybody at the club. Hopefully he can continue with us.
“Will he extend? I think he will, yes.”
Arteta also praised his team for their spirit to rally after conceding early on to Christian Pulisic’s opener, and highlighted the importance of securing Europa League football.
The Spaniard added: “It was a difficult start when we conceded so early. If I know something about these players, is that we weren’t going to give up.
“We played probably the best 30 minutes after since I arrived. I am so proud to represent these players and this club.
“It is a double reward for us. It is really important for this club in every way to be in Europe. We all did it so I am so happy.
“The players were completely knackered and they made a massive effort through the coronavirus to keep fit so I am so happy for them.”
