Mikel Arteta tells Emiliano Martinez what he must do to keep Bernd Leno’s spot

Emiliano Martinez has slotted into the Arsenal goal in place of the injured Bernd Leno and Mikel Arteta has told him what is required to become the club’s No 1.

Mikel Arteta has told Emiliano Martinez that a string of impressive performances will not be enough to usurp Bernd Leno as the club’s No 1.

Instead he wants the goalkeeper to be a consistent performer for Arsenal over a prolonged period.

The Argentine has deputised for Leno following the German’s injury at Brighton when the Premier League restarted.

That match ended badly with Martinez conceding a stoppage time goal, but since then he has kept three clean sheets in four games.

Arteta has praised the 27-year-old’s patience but warned him that he must continued producing.

He said: “That’s what he’s been trying to do for a long period now at the club. As I said before, his preparation, his attitude has been spot on.

“He’s been very respectful, very patient and now that he has the opportunity, he’s grabbing it. At this level, it’s not about two, three, eight or 10 games, it’s about the consistency over a lot of games and that’s what he needs to prove now.”

Martinez has been at the Emirates since 2012 but never been able to establish himself as first choice.

During those eight years he has had six loan spells away at the likes of Reading and Getafe.

But Arteta has shown he is not afraid to make big selection calls as he looks to shape his Arsenal squad.

The former Manchester City No 2 has already proved his willingness to back youth.

Bukayo Saka has been one of the most successful stories of Arsenal’s inconsistent season and recently celebrated his new deal with a goal in a 2-0 win at Wolves.

The likes of Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have also shown their worth.
