Owen Hargreaves believes his former club Manchester United desperately need a new forward to play off the right-hand side, touting the “special” Jadon Sancho as the player to fulfil the role.
The Borussia Dortmund star has been of interest to United for the last two summers, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now placing the 20-year-old as his priority signing.
Dortmund holding out for their desired £108million asking price, with the two clubs understood to be miles apart over that valuation. Standard Sport understands that United will exhaust all avenues of negotiation to complete the signing, however.
While Daniel James started the season on the right flank after completing a £15m move last summer, academy graduate Mason Greenwood has since solidified the position as his own, scoring 10 goals in 31 Premier League games.
And while Hargreaves has hailed the “magnificent” performances of Greenwood, he believes Sancho would provide that extra percentage of quality.
“He’s an attacker, he can play off the right, he normally plays off the right and United desperately need someone to play off the right-hand side,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.
“Mason Greenwood’s done magnificent. But look at [Sancho’s] numbers, 17 goals, 16 assists [sic, 17 assists]. Those numbers are outrageous at this level for his young age.
“He can play off the right-hand side, he can play in the hole, he can play off the left, and at times he even plays through the middle.”
“He gives them goals and assists,” he added. “I think the other guys do but I think Jadon just gives you something really, really special.
“He’s one of the best dribblers of the ball, he’s creative, he plays off the cuff, he’s almost unplayable one-v-one.”
While the primary stumbling block currently seems to be Dortmund’s valuation of the winger, Hargreaves believes Sancho’s impact – both on and off the pitch – make him a worthwhile investment.
“I’m all for it, I think he’s just what they need really,” he said. “This is money well invested.
“I think he’s going to make a huge difference, fans will love him, gets them off their seats. I’m looking forward to seeing him in a red shirt.”
